The Mick Continues To Dominate The Card World!!!

Collecting baseball cards has been a cherished hobby for enthusiasts around the world, transcending generations and capturing the essence of America’s favorite pastime. The allure of these small, cardboard treasures lies not only in their nostalgic value but also in the potential for discovering rare and valuable pieces of sports history. In this essay, we will explore the art of collecting baseball cards and delve into some notable sales that have left an indelible mark on the hobby.

The tradition of collecting baseball cards dates back to the late 19th century, coinciding with the rise of professional baseball in the United States. Initially distributed as promotional tools by tobacco and confectionery companies, these cards featured images of baseball players and quickly gained popularity among fans. As the years passed, the hobby evolved, with card designs becoming more sophisticated, and the market expanding to include various brands and sets.

One of the driving forces behind the fascination with baseball cards is the connection they provide to the players and moments that have defined the sport. Each card tells a story, encapsulating a specific era or highlighting the achievements of a particular player. Collectors often find joy in assembling comprehensive sets, chasing after the cards of their favorite athletes, or pursuing rare and limited-edition releases.

Notably, the baseball card market has witnessed some remarkable sales that have astonished both collectors and the general public. One such instance is the sale of the Honus Wagner T206 card, considered the holy grail of baseball cards. Honus Wagner, a legendary shortstop for the Pittsburgh Pirates, requested to have his cards removed from the American Tobacco Company’s production due to ethical concerns. Consequently, only a handful of these cards were ever released, making them exceptionally rare. In 2016, a Honus Wagner T206 card was sold for a staggering $3.12 million, setting a record for the highest price ever paid for a baseball card.

Another noteworthy sale involved the iconic 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle card. Mickey Mantle, a baseball icon and New York Yankees legend, holds a special place in the hearts of collectors. The 1952 Topps card featuring Mantle is particularly coveted, known for its scarcity and the captivating image of the young slugger. In 2018, a pristine, gem-mint version of the card fetched a remarkable $2.88 million at auction, reaffirming the enduring appeal and investment value of vintage baseball cards.

These notable sales underscore the incredible market dynamics within the baseball card collecting community. While the hobby remains rooted in passion and nostalgia, the potential for financial gain through rare and highly sought-after cards adds an additional layer of excitement for collectors. As technology continues to shape the landscape of collecting, with online platforms facilitating trading and sales, the tradition of collecting baseball cards remains as vibrant and captivating as ever. Whether motivated by a love for the game, a desire for connection to baseball history, or the thrill of the hunt for rare gems, collectors continue to contribute to the enduring legacy of baseball card collecting. Gentle Tom Landry – Did Not Disappoint

Tom Landry Autograph

This is an example of a Tom Landry autograph, this example was obtained by me through the mail or TTM. The first time I wrote Mr. Landry via the mail, he sent the item back within 2 weeks. The second time I sent him an item in the mail, it was this Football card, from the Pro Set manufacturing company. It took about 1 month, I did not know it until the card was returned to me signed, with a note. The note was from his wife, and it stated that Tom had been hospitalized and that is why the item was delayed. Later on I was able to find out that Tom Landry was battling Leukemia, sadly. Can you imagine, asking someone for an autograph and that person telling you that the reason they were delayed with your item, was an illness. It speaks volumes about the type of person he was as well as his family. His wife wrote the note.

Today, you’re lucky if the athlete, coach, or actor you are seeking an autograph from, does not send you to Hell and back. Boy times certainly have changed. Out with the 1960’s, and 1970’s went human decency. Take it from me, an autograph collector for the better part of nearly 40 years. It is not common. Insults, bad looks, and temperament are. Jason Kidd Gets The Call To The Hall

Jason Kidd – HOF 2018

A moment that many of us have waited for…Jason Kidd, and the Call to the Hall…2018 Hall of Fame. Jason Kidd has really done it all, NBA Championship, long career, coach, that is just about as full circle as a career gets. So as an autograph collector and memorabilia enthusiast I jumped on the opportunity to take a shot and meet him, and he did not disappoint. Jason Kidd as the coach of the Milwaukee Bucks did not disappoint me. I met him in Miami, while the Bucks were playing the Miami Heat.

So the low down on the kidd was, he would not sign, and if he did it would be a good experience. That is the main reason, that I my friends, don’t listen to anyone when it comes to graphs, and encounters. I treated the guy with respect, and not only did he sign multiples for me, he took the time to make sure that he did not dark-spot any of the pics that he signed for me. For those of you that do not know what a dark-spot is, basically when an autograph gets done, and most of the graph is not legible because of the black or dark colored sharpie or pen, blends into the background of the photo. Thus dark-spot. I would like to personally thank Jason Kidd for the encounter, and I wish you many good things!!!

Boston Celtics – Kyrie Irving Autographed Jersey

Kyrie Irving – Boston Celtics Autographed Jersey

The Boston Celtics were in town, and we made it a point to attempt to get Kyrie to autograph a new Boston Celtics jersey. From previous years, it seemed that this would not be too difficult. However, the rain did not cooperate in Miami, and through it all he was true to his word, and even signed autographs in the rain. Which I can tell you it is very difficult to get them to sign most of the time, in beautiful Florida weather.

He assured us both en-route to the shoot around, and upon returning from the shoot around that he would sign prior to leaving for the game. He was true to his word. While the rest of the Celtics were a bust, he was stellar. I want to personally thank him for the effort, and not disappointing anyone that took the time to wait for him. Once again, he displayed that he is a class act. Thanks again.
